Step 1: Budget Setup
Let's start with the basics — give your budget an identity.
Why does this matter? Naming your budget makes it real. A label like "2026 Family Budget" or "My First Budget" turns this from abstract numbers into YOUR plan. The pay frequency helps us calculate how your income flows each month — because someone paid weekly sees money differently than someone paid monthly.
Step 2: Income Sources
Where does your money come from? Add every source — job, side hustle, freelance, rental, investments.
Why does this matter? Your income is the foundation of your entire budget. Without knowing exactly how much comes in, you can't plan where it goes. Be honest here — this is between you and your budget. Include everything: primary job, side gigs, rental income, investment returns, child support — anything that puts money in your pocket.
⚠️ Enter your NET income — not gross
Your net income is your take-home pay — what actually hits your bank account after taxes, health insurance, and retirement contributions are deducted. Do NOT enter your gross (pre-tax) salary. If your paycheck deposits $3,200, enter $3,200 — not $4,500.
What you enter here copies to all 12 months of your budget. You can edit any individual month later on the budget sheet.

Step 3: Fixed Monthly Bills
These are recurring expenses that stay the same every month — the bills you know are coming.
Why does this matter? Fixed bills are the non-negotiables — rent, phone, insurance, car payment. Knowing your fixed costs tells you exactly how much "free" money you actually have each month. Most people are surprised when they add these up. That surprise is the first step toward real financial awareness.
Bills are recurring expenses that stay the same every month — rent, phone, insurance. These will auto-fill across all 12 months so you don't have to type them 12 times. You can always adjust individual months later.

Step 4: Select Budget Categories
Choose the spending areas that match your life. Each category adds pre-made line items to your budget sheet.
Why does this matter? Categories organize your spending into buckets so nothing falls through the cracks. You don't need to pick them all — just the ones that are part of your life right now. You can always come back and add more later. This step is optional — you can skip it if you prefer to start with just income and bills.
Need more? You can add Family, Entertainment, Insurance, Pets, Education, Business, and Misc categories from your budget sheet anytime.
